Light and shadow work through the relief \u2014 not through the colour. This creates a sense of depth that you can see.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What \u2018structure\u2019 means in printing<\/h2>\n\n\n

A flat print displays an image. A textured print builds up the motif in fine layers \u2014 the relief refracts the light, casts micro-shadows and changes depending on the viewing angle and the time of day. The surface remains the same wall, the same floor \u2014 but it takes on a third dimension that remains visible as long as light falls on it.<\/p>\n\n\n

The following macro photographs show just how intricate these structures are: layers of paint built up on concrete, sharp edges, open pores in the substrate \u2014 the print follows the material rather than covering it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Structure on wood<\/h2>\n\n\n

Wood has its own unique character \u2014 grain, knotholes and joints. Direct printing superimposes the design onto the wood without sealing or covering the surface: the wood\u2019s texture remains part of the image.<\/p>\n\n\n
