3D structures — visible depth in direct printing

Light and shadow work through the relief — not through the colour. This creates a sense of depth that you can see.

What ‘structure’ means in printing

A flat print displays an image. A textured print builds up the motif in fine layers — the relief refracts the light, casts micro-shadows and changes depending on the viewing angle and the time of day. The surface remains the same wall, the same floor — but it takes on a third dimension that remains visible as long as light falls on it.

The following macro photographs show just how intricate these structures are: layers of paint built up on concrete, sharp edges, open pores in the substrate — the print follows the material rather than covering it up.

Structure on wood

Wood has its own unique character — grain, knotholes and joints. Direct printing superimposes the design onto the wood without sealing or covering the surface: the wood’s texture remains part of the image.

The images shown are for inspiration only — they are not actual client projects.
